Quoterday – Feeling Alive

True love includes a feeling of deep joy that we are alive.

-Thich Nhat Hanh, How to Love

It’s amazing how often I forget this wonderful blessing.  I am alive. My heart beats. My lungs breathe fresh air. And I rarely think about any of it.

Cultivating love within ourselves starts with this simple yet amazing piece of information.  It forms the foundation of the fountain from which love can gush in abundance.

This is not always easy.  Of all the things we take for granted, being alive is often number one on my list.  Whenever I begin to slip into the mud of minor day-to-day problems or foul moods, I often forget that having problems necessarily entails I am blessed with the gift of life.

Even people who don’t enjoy being alive and wish they were dead (if you feel this way, I implore you to seek help) benefit from being alive.  Hopeless people still have the luxury of debating the value of their life. They have a life to value (or devalue) in the first place. Being alive presents us all with the opportunity to feel better tomorrow than we do today.

So whenever we fall into discouragement or despair, it may behoove us to take a deep breath and appreciate the very fact that we can breathe.  It can provide some much-needed perspective.

I am also grateful for the chance to spend time with friends.  The Misfits may have drifted a bit, but I relish our adventures nonetheless.
